Gold market units: compare a US-dollar troy-ounce quotation with the corresponding pound-per-gram reference only when the gold and exchange-rate observations come from the same dated source.
Gold price in USD and GBP explained
International gold headlines often use US dollars per troy ounce. UK sellers usually want to understand the equivalent market reference in pounds per gram. Those figures can be compared only when the gold quote and the currency conversion belong to a coherent, dated snapshot.
Two currencies, two weight units
A dollar-per-troy-ounce quote and a pound-per-gram quote describe different presentations of a gold market reference. To move between them, the exchange-rate direction must be stated, and a troy ounce must be converted to grams. The site’s rounded implementation constant is 31.1035 grams per troy ounce. It is not the weight of an ordinary ounce.
Conversion method: when the exchange rate is US dollars for one pound, approximate market GBP per gram equals USD per troy ounce divided by USD per pound, then divided by 31.1035. The gold and currency observations must belong to a coherent, dated snapshot. This conversion does not produce a selling offer.
Verified market observation: the panel below uses gold and exchange-rate values from one dated provider response. During normal trading, it shows figures only when that source is at most two hours old. During the usual weekend market closure, a clearly labelled last verified observation may remain visible for up to 80 hours; it is not a current trading price. Missing, inconsistent or otherwise stale figures are withheld. The displayed time is when the provider collected the response, not the page-load time or a guaranteed trading tick. This independent market reference is not the calculator’s quote.
Weight converter: enter your own weight in grams, kilograms, troy ounces or standard ounces. The unit conversion works without a quote. Approximate USD and GBP fine-gold market references appear only when the paired source passes the checks above; they are not buying offers for jewellery or scrap.

Convert your gold weight
Enter only your weight. Unit conversion works without a market quote; USD and GBP metal references appear only when a verified observation is available.
Use a decimal point, without thousands separators. Troy and standard ounces are different units.
Fine-gold content at the market reference only. This is not a jewellery valuation or buying offer; actual purity, condition and terms affect any offer.
Why the GBP figure can move differently
Even if a dollar gold reference barely moves, its sterling equivalent can change when the GBP/USD exchange rate changes. The reverse can happen too. This is why converting an old GBP observation with today’s FX rate does not create a trustworthy historical dollar series. For dated sterling history, see the GBP gold price chart; it is not a historical USD series.
Market reference versus your transaction
A market quote is not an offer for jewellery, coins or scrap gold. A selling estimate depends on the item’s assessed purity and metal weight and the applicable buying rate. Use the gold price calculator for the selling route. To buy bullion, visit the separate gold-bars shop; its product prices serve a different purpose.
