Why Britannias are easy to sell

The Gold Britannia is The Royal Mint’s flagship bullion coin, struck every year since 1987. Each 1oz coin contains a full troy ounce — 31.1g — of fine gold, and the ½oz, ¼oz and 1/10oz fractional sizes contain exactly proportionate amounts. Because the specification is fixed by The Royal Mint, a genuine Britannia’s gold content is never in doubt.

Britannias are also UK legal tender — the 1oz coin carries a £100 face value — so any gain when you sell is exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents (see the current GOV.UK Capital Gains Tax guidance). We do not give tax advice; if you are unsure, speak to a qualified adviser.

We price every Britannia from the live market on the day you sell — the figures above update with the market through the day. You can sense-check any gold weight yourself with our gold price calculator.

22ct or 24ct? The 2013 change

Since 2013 the Gold Britannia has been struck in 999.9 fine gold — 24 carat. Coins dated 1987–2012 are 22 carat (916.7 fineness), alloyed for hardness, so they weigh more — about 33.93g gross — but contain exactly the same 31.1g of fine gold. Whichever year you own, you are paid for the fine gold content, so both versions are valued from the live market in the same way.

Most Britannias sell at their bullion value. In very rare cases a particular year can be worth more — bring yours in and we will check for you.

How selling works

  1. Bring your Britannias to 5 Hatton Garden (no appointment needed) or start online with our insured postal service.
  2. We weigh and test them in front of you and make an offer from the live prices above.
  3. Once you accept our valuation, payment is arranged using your chosen method. Timing depends on the selected method and bank processing. Photo ID may be needed, as required by UK anti-money-laundering law.

Your final valuation depends on verified purity, payable weight and condition. We also buy gold in every form — jewellery, bars and all recognised bullion coins.
